Cooking made easy – the ideal worktop for every kitchen

Anyone who spends a lot of time in the kitchen will be familiar with the problem: one quick go with a knife without a cutting board and already there are unsightly indentations on the worktop. But even those who wouldn't call themselves master chefs will have noticed in older kitchens that the appearance of the worktop leaves something to be desired over time.

To avoid all these problems and to complement the desired kitchen design with a suitable worktop, we have compiled the advantages and disadvantages of leading materials for you. If you have further questions, we at Möbel-Peeck look forward to advising you in our kitchen studio in Mannheim and Worms.

You are spoiled for choice – the possible materials for your worktop

The wide selection of different materials for your kitchen refers not only to the cabinets or electrical appliances, but also to the nature of your worktop. Especially this should be made of appropriate quality and meet your cooking preferences. After all, in addition to cutting and chopping, it must also withstand hot pots and other kitchen appliances; and should still blend perfectly into the overall picture.

Even if every panel should ideally be robust and easy to care for, the properties of wood, laminate or stone are very different. And with that come the advantages and disadvantages of the materials. In the market as well as in our kitchen studio, you will find, among others, the following materials:

  • Wood in the form of real wood, solid wood or a replica
  • Plastic such as laminate
  • Natural stone, engineered stone and porcelain stoneware (ceramic)

Wooden panels – Advantages & disadvantages

Wooden panels are particularly popular for kitchens in the country house style, but also contribute significantly to the look in other kitchen designs. The advantages and disadvantages of wooden worktops are as follows:

Advantages:

  • Real wood is renewable and therefore ecological. This means wood also convinces with a natural look.
  • You have a large selection of woods (e.g. bamboo, oak or walnut).
  • The choice of wood allows for many design directions and optical highlights through grain.

Disadvantages:

  • Wooden panels are often found in a higher price range.
  • Wood is sensitive to water and absorbs humidity. This can lead to isolated, swollen areas if not properly cared for.
  • The material is not cut or scratch resistant.
  • If durability and a beautiful appearance are desired, the wood must be regularly cared for with appropriate products.
  • Replicas often do not have the same properties as real wood.

Plastic panels/laminate panels – Advantages & disadvantages

Due to their diverse appearance, plastic panels, for example made of laminate, are used for various kitchen designs. From country style to minimalism or modern – plastics are very popular for the work area in the kitchen.

Advantages:

  • Laminate panels are also available in wood or marble look.
  • They are a cheaper alternative to real wood.
  • The surface is easy to clean and waterproof.
  • Procurement is comparatively inexpensive.

Disadvantages:

  • The material is not heat resistant.
  • Cuts and scratches are quickly visible.

Stone panels – Advantages & disadvantages

If you want a natural but high-quality look in your kitchen, it is best to opt for a stone panel. Whether porcelain stoneware (ceramic), engineered stone or natural stone – stone panels fit into any design.

Advantages:

  • The material is water-repellent.
  • Cuts and scratches do not occur or only with difficulty.
  • Stone panels are very hygienic and require little maintenance because they are fine-pored.
  • The panel is heat resistant for a short time.

Disadvantages:

  • The cost of stone panels is in the higher price range.
  • Engineered stone panels often appear cool and unnatural because they have a uniform grain.
  • The stone may react to excessive sunlight and discolour.
