6 Different Kitchen Layouts: Which One Is Right for You?
Galley kitchen, L-shaped kitchen, or perhaps an island? If you're planning a new kitchen, you'll quickly realize that the design and furnishing possibilities are almost limitless. It's all the more important to thoroughly research the different kitchen layouts before purchasing, to best meet your personal demands and needs during planning. We at Westfalia Möbel-Peeck GmbH, furniture store in Mannheim and kitchen store in Worms have summarized the differences between the 6 most proven kitchen layouts for you to make your choice easier.
What kitchen layouts are there?
Which kitchen layouts are particularly popular is subject to changing trends. Over the years, however, 6 basic forms have become established, becoming true perennial favorites:
- One-wall
- Galley
- L-shaped
- U-shaped
- G-shaped
- Island
In a one-wall kitchen, a wall length of at least 3 meters is equipped with base and wall cabinets, usually including built-in appliances. For a galley kitchen, another kitchen line is added to the opposite wall. This space-saving model is particularly suitable for enclosed rooms with a floor area of 8 square meters or more.
The L-shaped layout, where the kitchen line is built around a corner, is suitable for both enclosed and open rooms. The U-shaped layout, which is recommended for rooms 10 square meters or larger and especially for square rooms, extends the L-shape with another line that either projects freely into the room or runs along the wall. If you want to maintain an open room feeling with this layout, it's best to plan with fewer tall cabinets.
The G-shaped layout, which requires at least 12 square meters of floor space, is particularly spacious. It features a fourth line that extends freely into the room from the U-shape. A kitchen island is also possible in rooms 15 square meters or larger. This stands completely free in the room and is usually supplemented by a kitchen line on the wall behind it.
What are the advantages & disadvantages of the different layouts?
While one-wall and galley kitchens are space-saving and budget-friendly, storage space can be challenging in one-wall kitchens, and integrating a dining area can be difficult with two lines. The L-shaped and U-shaped layouts offer more storage and workspace. They can also be well-planned as eat-in kitchens. However, the position of the dining area should be carefully considered here, as it is often situated away from the work area in an L-shaped kitchen, and integration is not always possible in a U-shaped kitchen.
G-shaped kitchens and islands offer extra ample storage and workspace. Additionally, workflows can often be planned efficiently, and these layouts are particularly well-suited as eat-in kitchens for larger families or groups. However, it should be noted that both layouts take up a lot of space.
Which kitchen layout is right for you?
To find out which kitchen layout is best for you, you should consider three factors above all:
- Size & layout of the kitchen area
- Sensible arrangement of work zones (prep, cooking, washing)
- Type of use (cooking-only or eat-in kitchen)
As soon as you look more closely at the space available to you and your kitchen requirements, individual layouts usually clearly emerge as favorites. For a small household, a one-wall or galley kitchen is often the best fit, while a large family might lean more towards a U-shaped or G-shaped layout.
